Fab 40 templates were free templates released by Microsoft for sharepoint 2007 and wss 3.0 to address some of the common scenarios encountered by SharePoint administrators, developers and event business/Marketing managers to demonstrate and show case some of the capabilities of MOSS to end users.

Discussion about that how good these templates are and in which scenario these are more helpful versus things which needs to be improved in these templates is a separate topic but I have noticed many SharePoint people using these templates either for small clients , for demonstration purpose and even for training purposes etc. ..

I have uploaded some of these Fab 40 templates for SP 2010, so now you can have Fab 40 for SP 2010, at least some of these are available for now…rest coming soon J .

Follow the instructions in readme file to install these, I strongly recommend that you install it in your test environment before testing it in real/production.

Nice job, may i ask, if you did reworked each one of them from scratch directly on SP2010, or have them all exported after upgrading them from MOSS 2007 towards SP 2010 !
Anyway, the time you took to re-build, re-package is worth all appreciation!C. Marius

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

Nice work. Thanks for sharing I've installed an SP 2010 environment in a VirtualBox environment and your templates are loading nicely there. One question... as I click on some of the objects, say in the Marketing Campaign template (Campaign A or Campaign B), the items will not load. Is this expected behaviour? The same held true in the Survey samples. Just curious. Thanks!

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

@ Brett
Yes that's the expected behaviour, have compared with 2007 Marketing Campaign template, and also found the same behaviour there.

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

Great effort! Since we have several sites created from KnowledgeBase templates are not working correctly after upgraded to 2010, I deployed your updated KnowledgeBase wsp from stsadm to 2010 after removing the 2007 version. It seems like the home page could not be displayed.

The home holds some webparts such as "Recent Additions", "Recent Changes", and "My Documents". Have you tested the migrated sites to have this issue? I quickly looked at the package and some features are hidden. Is this the intention?

Would you willing to work with us as consultant during your spare time to resolve this issue for our company? Your help is highly appreciated.

The template needs to be added as a subsite option for the root Publishing site collections. If you go to Site Settings -> Look and Feel -> Page layouts and site templates -> select the template and add it under subsite templates, it will be available.

Khalil,

I really only needed the HelpDesk, KnowledgeBase and TeamWorkSite templates for what i'm trying to accomplish.

All seems to be working for me, except the most important Template, which is the KnowledgeBase Template.

I followed the instructions and activated them.

I've created sites with HelpDesk and TeamWorkSite and I can create new parts and other things with them. I have no real issues.

The KnowledgeBase template, however, throws me 2 different errors when I click on 2 different links.

When clicking the "Write an Article" link, I get "Error, An unexpected error has occurred. " and a correlation ID.

When clicking the "Upload a Document" link, I get "Error, List does not exist. The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user."

This is after activating from the Solutions area and then creating a new site.

Do you have any information?

Thanks.

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

Hi Khalil - The other week I posted a comment on the DocumentLibraryReview template with the problem that the "Approval" and "Collect Feedback" workflows dont seem to exist. One response was to ensure that "Routing Workflows" is enabled. However I see "Routing Workflows" as a SharePoint 2007 feature but not in SP 2010.

On a side note, I directly asked Microsoft regarding if these templates would be created for 2010 by them, and while they did not have a final decision yet, they did direct me back to you.

I'm curious about the technical details on how you upgraded these templates. The server admin templates need the core application wsp first. The SPD workflows are tokenized and need a larder to be able to successfully associate with the list. Did you use the new site definition upgrade or feature upgrade tags? Please consider righting a blog post on how you did the upgrade.
Thanks

I downloaded the Employee Training template and its missing two highly important lists. One is the "Courses I am attending" and the other is "Courses I have attended". Is there anyway you can include those in the WSP? Thanks and great work!

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

After upgrading site templates based on the IT Workspace the Knowledge Base Articles items from the Knowledge Base list will not render the field controls as they did in WSS 3.0. Also when attemting to create a new Knowledge base Article the page is empty (No field controls as well).

The Knowledge Base Article content type uses the "/_layouts/CreateWebPage.aspx" application page as its document template. The application page appears to have completely changed in SP 2010 to render as modal window asking only for the title of the page.

Thanks,

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

@Chris:
We have checked the “Employee Training” template, it doesn’t contain lists named “Courses I am Attending” and “Courses I have attended”. Actually these are Webparts named “Courses I am Attending” and “Courses I have attended”. This template contains Lists named “Courses” and “Registrations”, and “Courses I am Attending” and “Courses I have attended” are just Webparts, that filter-out items from these lists based on some criteria. These two web parts are available on the default page of the template. Can you see them on the default page or not?

Courese I Have Attended
"List does not exist. The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user."

I recently did a complete install and configuration of SharePoint 2010 on a new server. Nothing was ported over from any existing databases. Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

@Everyone who is looking for the Knowledge base template:

The knowledge base template we created from scratch for SP 2010 was experiencing some issue on the Write an article link which was not getting the list ID properly. For that purpose, I have created a visual web part which can be installed using the customQuickLaunchAutomate.wsp file. Please re-download the knowledge base template from the blog, it will contain two wsp's now. One for the template and one for the visual web part.

Here is how to use the visual web part after you set up the site using the knowledgebase.wsp
• Deploy the customQuickLaunchAutomate.wsp on your farm
• Go to the home page of your knowledge base site and edit the page
• Add a new web part > From the Custom category > Choose updateQuickL web part and add it on your page
• Edit the web part properties and set it to Hidden
The quick launch issue will be resolved and you will be able to open the page using “Write an Article” link.

Re: Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

Apart from the "Write an Article" link, we have two issues:We ran into an issue where we can’t seem to check in a new article. Checking the properties of a new article, we noticed the Title field was not filled. So we entered a Title, but this was not enough to make the check-in work. The Article Content field also prevents the article from checking in. This field gives the following error: This field can have no more than 255 characters. Which is a very strange error, cause the field is actually empty.Second, we have some upgrade issues, cause in the 2007 site the column Article Content is filled with the content, and in the 2010 site, there is a new column called Wiki Content. When clicking an article from the migrated content, the article seems empty, cause the Wiki Content is shown and not the Article Content.Could you help us with these two issues? Thanks!
